Our family owned vineyard is located just 2 1/2 hours from Sydney, 1 1/2 hours from Newcastle and 20 min from Pokolbin; Situated at the foothills of the beautiful Brokenback Mountain Range, in the Hunter Valley Wine Region with frontage to Wollombi Brook (a tributary of the Hunter River).
Broke Fordwich is historically known as one of the oldest wine growing areas in Australia with original plantings dating back to the early 1820’s, the region only became recognised as a separate viticultural sub-region of the Hunter Valley in September1997.
One of the many reasons for our extremely fertile soil, (widely referred to as the ‘Fordwich Sill’), is due to an ancient lava flow that over millions of years has broken down into a wonderful red volcanic clay loam , full of essential trace elements. This soil can be compared to the famous ‘Terra Rossa’ of the Coonawarra region.
The Fordwich Sill soil on the top blocks of the vineyard is ideal for the still Chardonnay & Shiraz varieties. The wonderful sandy loam soil which emerges from the banks of the Wollombi Brook is perfect for the growing of the grapes harvested for the production of our award winning Blanc de Blanc & outstanding Verdelho.
